But ultimately its a small price to pay to (help) keep me out of a hospital bed - a place Ive spent more than my fair share of time, with much pain and many tears. For the record, masks arent perfect and NOBODY wants to wear them. They arent a fix for ANY virus and they certainly arent guaranteed. Nothing is. Thus the “disclaimer” on the boxes and given by the scientific community regarding Covid. However, according to the knowledge we have AT THIS TIME, they DO help. Nobody who actually knows anything about germs is arguing that point - its simply understanding the degree to which they help that is unclear. But even so, this is what were being asked to do in order to help protect others. Its such a simple thing, yet people are getting so angry because they are tying it to unrelated issues - an ignorant, petty, and, under the circumstances, selfish thing to do. I mentioned I am a person of faith. I have been incredibly saddened and ashamed of my fellow Christians and fellow conservative voters who show absolutely no concern for the suffering they may inflict on me, and others like me, by putting us at risk. But it goes beyond that. they flaunt it. like some badge of bravery they think does them credit. They truly believe theyre in a fight against the wicked over wearing a mask! They should be the FIRST to care but instead theyre so concerned about what their God-given rights are that they choose to ignore what God wants us all to DO - “doing unto others”, “caring for the least of these”, “denying yourself”, “be ye kind”, “serve one another”, “the greatest of these is love”, “love is not self-serving”, etc., etc. (Just a FYI here, Jesus made it very clear how He feels about putting the needs of others first. This shouldnt make a difference but for some reason it does and people tend to use the excuse that the old (vulnerable) people should simply quarantine in order to stay healthy. But unfortunately many of the people that are in the vulnerable/high-risk category are also the people who have to keep doctor appts, go to the hospital, and pick up medications from the pharmacy. I go to extreme lengths to run any (absolutely necessary) errands during “off” hours to avoid crowds. At times I have to leave the house when Im quite sick because I have no other option. Those who are healthy are making it harder on those of us who are already suffering. Perhaps I wouldnt have to worry about that if I knew people were doing their part to keep others safe. Perhaps I would be able to attend church for the first time in months if Christians actually WERE pro-life and werent so angry at the thought of MY ILLNESS infringing on their constitutional right to a visible face. As it is, I find that theyre quite happy to risk a life as long as they dont have to wear a mask to the funeral. The thing is, I realize that most people just arent thinking about things from the perspective of a chronically ill person. I dont think that most people want to hurt others, they just dont know enough about why they should change their behavior. Yes, most people will recover just fine. Most people wont have to live with permanent damage. Most people wont be put on a ventilator and risk their organs shutting down. But some of us will. I hope you can appreciate how hurtful and insulting it is to know that such a tiny gesture, like covering your mouth in public, is too much to ask of people who have the luxury of good health. That my wellness - any human life - is worth so little to someone. Ive read comments below that literally say, “since when have we started to care about other peoples health”. To those of you who find it so demeaning and difficult to wear a mask for the good of someone else, God help you if you ever endure some kind of ACTUAL physical hardship. You wont make it. Elsewhere there is commercial television, which is provided free to its viewers while funded by an income from advertisement. A very successful arrangement: free to view if you didn't mind the occasional interuption to the entertainment. But who noticed that the provided entertainment never outshone the sparkle of the ads? Whoever noticed that they came to buy branded products rather than basic materials like washing powder or coffee? See? If you are not buying your entertainment, you are the product.
So, nothing new in social media on this score: ads on the tele, ads on the phone, what's new here?
The reason it is so hard to isolate what is new and unnerving about social media is because it is so obvious. Here's the core. In the documentary, a youth undertakes not to use his phone for a week. No matter at what level, education is information, and nothing else. See now that social media is merely an extension of this system, just more recycled information. And you can see why the narrator was so uneasy: he sensed he was already part of the social media universe, trained up long before he knew where it would take him. And his unease: I suspect it arises because he senses the strangeness, the otherness of the world outside that closed info sphere.
See now that the youth could not think for himself. Why? Consider the last time human beings thought for themselves, back in sixteenth century Europe, and the hundred years of religious wars that followed, that devastated large parts of the continent.
